What you need to know before working in Sweden

Reindeers, unbelievably beautiful scenery, calmness, Volvo, Saab, IKEA. Sweden can be described with these words in the simplest way. The swedish scenery is full of marvellous natural wonders and cosy wooden houses, so if you like being in the nature, you will love this place.

Swedish people are really helpful, if you have any problems, they will gladly help you. However, the „coldness” of the North is peculiar to them, too. Besides, they are curious, accepting and most importantly really tolerant towards you, whichever culture you come from. They address everyone informally – excluding the royal family of course -, and they tend to be maximally precise, but expect this from other people, too.

A common misbelief is that Sweden is really cold, and covered with snow during the whole year. Since Sweden is situated in the continental climate zone, its weather is similar to central European countries. This is mainly true regarding the southern part of the country, because the further you go up North, the colder it gets. There are no heat waves during summer, however in winter the weather is really cold and it usually snows.

Who are employers searching for?

Employers – similar to other developed, western countries – are mainly searching for information technologists, healthcare workers (doctors, nurses) and physical workers (carpenter, waterpipe technicians, electricians, construction workers). Besides, they gladly accept teachers too.

In Sweden, „workplace culture” is really developed. Your bosses treat you as partners, and people are natural team-workers. Because of that, if you have the chance to participate in a company party or teambuilding event, don’t hesitate and take part, and you will be part of the team in a short time.

How much money can you earn?

As it is usual in developed countries, in Sweden there are also very little differences between people’s fortunes. As expected though, highly demanded jobs pay the best. One Euro is worth about 10,3 Swedish krona (Swedish crown). The average salary is somewhere around 165-175 Swedish kronas per hour, which means around 16-17 Euros.
For instance, even a McDonald’s cashier doesn’t really earn that bad, they can bring home 10-11 Euros per hour. Calculated with 160 hours it sums up 16000-17000 Swedish kronas – so around 1600-1700 Euros.

Working in IT, you can earn 45000 kronas/month averagely, teachers can bring home about 31000, and construction workers receive 40000 a month. Doctors can earn 44000 Swedish kronas monthly.

How expensive is it to live?

It can be said that as a couple, you can live really well from average salaries. You can spend on travelling, can save up money and you are able to go out partying, too. A 40-50 m2 apartment costs about 3-6000 kronas in smaller towns, while in the capital city it can also reach up to 8-11000 kronas.

Food can also seem expensive observed as a foreigner, as 1 kg of flour costs about 5 kronas, and 1 litre of milk costs about 10 kronas. Compared to the swedish salaries though, you can lead a really good life.

Is language knowledge needed?

Almost everyone speaks English, but in order to be able to get a job, Swedish knowledge is a must. It’s not only suitable for work, but also for getting accepted. Speaking only English, you can feel like an outsider constantly.

If you decide to move to Sweden, you can expect a calm life, where people are happy and understanding towards each other.  New jobs in Sweden »
